outside in

Outside in Garden Rooms

Outside In is a multi-award winning, female-led business specialising in designing, building and installing luxury Garden Rooms. They also build Glamping Pods for distribution throughout the UK. The business was set up by Mel Russell in 2017 when she spotted a gap in the market for bespoke garden rooms, custom built in Scotland. During COVID, the business grew so rapidly that Mel’s sister, Wendy, joined to assist with the expansion on the east side of the country.

“We're fierce advocates of solid planning, project management, quality controls and client relations," says Mel. "Our team are all employees who now work a four-day week, which is pretty unheard of in the construction industry but it leads to a really strong team, delivering a high-end product.”

Graystone Gallery

Graystone Gallery is one of Edinburgh's newest fine art destinations, specialising in contemporary Scottish painting and sculpture. Offering beautiful landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes as well as outstanding abstract and semi-abstract pieces by internationally collected artists, it’s an art lover's dream located on 52 Hamilton Place. Husband and wife duo Rob and Lesley Briggs are the creative minds behind the gallery. They’re passionate about supporting and nurturing Scottish artists. They love building and maintaining connections and it’s been their dream to open their own gallery.

“Lesley worked in fashion before embarking on her own art journey in 2017. I worked in business communications,” Rob reveals. Adding, “Since then, Lesley has completed an MA in History of Art and assisted the Chief Archivist at the Whitechapel Gallery before we moved here 3 years ago. We got the keys for our current gallery in Stockbridge at the end of October 2023. We love learning and expanding our offering.”

Lesley’s Top Tip… Colour and art truly enhance a space but buying art is a highly personal experience. Smartist is an app that allows us to create virtual rooms and hang virtual art in them. We use this tool to show a client what a piece of art might look like in their home at no cost. We also offer a free home trial service in Edinburgh.

I look after everything from the smallest details, to helping with the big decisions that make such a difference to the finished interior.

renee turner

Renée Turner Interiors

East-Lothian based interior designer Renée Turner found her enthusiasm for interior design while designing and building her own home. Swapping a corporate career in oil and gas for her own interior design business in 2018, she now helps clients create personal and bespoke spaces with furniture design, kitchens, bathrooms and general room designs.

“My approach goes beyond mere aesthetics because I really get to know and understand the unique lifestyles, stories, and aspirations of my clients,” she tells us. “I aim to deliver residential design that reflects those who live in it because a home should be a sanctuary tailored to individual needs and comforts. Clients can expect a collaborative and transparent journey with me. I prioritise clear communication and involve clients in every step of the design process. I am also a champion of sustainability and thoughtful sourcing, encouraging upcycling or reupholstery where possible. My designs are not about trends but about timeless appeal and functionality.”

Renée’s Top Tip: Embrace personal style. Start with pieces you love and build around them. Don't be afraid to experiment by mixing styles, textures, and colour to create your space. Make sure you also get lots of samples to play with! Design with functionality in mind first and don’t forget lighting which can dramatically change the mood of a room.

joan ava innes

Joan’s top tip: Craft a sleep sanctuary. Begin by considering the choice of materials in your bedroom space. Keep them as natural as possible. Avoid manmade fibres such as memory foam as it originates from oil. Choose natural fibres in your bedding avoiding poly blends. Let fresh air in and turn off the heating. A cool environment is the most conductive to sleep. Warmer temperatures reduce REM sleep and increase your chances of waking through the night.
